Our young students, Mei and Pond, have initiated the first university course.

Mei decided to study the degree of English and Pond superior degree in Agricultural Engineering.

With the start of college costs have increased. The semester tuition, study materials and

accommodation in rooms in the capital require to increase the fund of Udutama for these

scholarships. Udutama devotes more than 2000 € annually to this project, but together with

the funds raised by the ex volunteer Imma, it is still insufficient to cover all expenses.

We recently reached an agreement with Travel Insurance Company IATI (www.iatiseguros.com),

which we were already recommended by us due to the satisfaction of users in different travel in

Thailand forums. They will offer a 5% discount to those who contract one of their insurances

from our website and, in turn, we will receive a small percentage. We do not know whether

it will be enough to cover the increase in the costs of this scholarship project, but it all

adds up. We ask your cooperation, either through membership fees or specific donations,

which can be processed in the Collaborate section of this website.

Here we share with you the texts and photos sent by Mei and Pond. You can see previous

articles on this project in this section.

MEI (direct transcript of his written in English):

Hello! Teacher Imma, Xavier and everyone. I hope you are doing well. I am very happy

to write this report in English again if anything was wrong I apologize now. I have studying

at Chiang Rai Rajabhat university In English program for two month now. It’s quite a lot

difficult but but never mind because I love it.

i've decided to to study in this program so i will try and will do it better and better.

My English is improve now. I practice my English by watch English conversation video

and listen English songs always. I think when I was finished University my English will

be good because most of subject I have study in English.

There are fourty-fives students in my class room. I am an only Lahu student in this

classroom so no one speak Lahu language with me but it was find because I should

learn others language.

Life of University student isn’t the same as high school student at all. I  have to do

everything by myself, adjust myself to be a person who have responsibility and learn

how to solve the problem.

I had learnt a lot from teachers, friends and society. It have good and bad thing  but

I should to learn both of them to remind myself that what I should to do and what

I should to be? However I will intend in class and to be good student.

Thank you everyone for encourage me and always give me love, take care, help and

for all thing .

I promise that I never disappoint you. Thank you so much

POND (English translation from the original in Thai):

Good Morning.

I want to continue studying in the future because I believe that higher education can help

me find a better job with which I can help support my family, parents and siblings. Thanks

to the benevolence and kindness of my benefactors, I can continue studying.

My mother supported me and wanted to continue me studying but did not have enough

money to help me pay my studies. My father did not want to continue studying because

he has no money and has always said that her daughter needed to help the family to pay

for food and expenses of the humble house.

But my teacher at the technical school of Agriculture and director of the association Udutama,

accompanied me to my village to talk with my father and my mother could convince

my father to let me continue studying. My father told them we are very poor and have

little money to live, and therefore could not pay anything for my studies or my support.

But after hearing how good it can be for me to continue studying, he agreed and said

he gave me permission. This made me very happy because I like to study and I want to

have the opportunity to find a good job that better help my family and my community

in the future.

I decided to continue my studies of Agriculture, the top grade, because I would like in

the future to have a plantation of horticulture to grow flowers and plants of all kinds

and offer to sell. I always thought that education is a treasure. I want to learn to

manage the property to be my own boss for the future benefit of my family and my community.

I want to thank wholeheartedly providing immense help to me, my benefactors and

donors, who give me material and moral support. I appreciate the help received so far

and that may offer in the future. If I do not have this help my future would be dark.

Thanks to all to make me have light and hope in my future and I can study and work harder.

Thank you very much !

Cultural ecotrekking with ethnic minorities PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 21 April 2016 11:17

Udutama has reached a partnership agreement with a local social organization of guides from the Lahu ethnic minority and the travel agency Mundo Nómada in Thailand to promote this 3 days trekking of sustainable and responsible tourism, based on the community, in order to generate awareness of the peculiar ways of life and problems of these minorities.

For more information and to join, go to the following link of Mundo Nómada in Thailand:

http://toursentailandia.com/tour/eco-trekking-cultural-de-3-dias-en-chiang-rai/

Moreover, the travel agency Mundo Nómada has created a cheap trip of 15 days to Thailand that includes the eco-trekking, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and a few days at the amazing island of Koh Tao.

If you want to apply for the whole trip, you can find more information and the application form in this link:

http://toursentailandia.com/tour/eco-trekking-en-el-norte-e-isla-de-koh-tao/

The participants will have the opportunity to explore the wonderful human and natural landscape of the province of Chiang Rai while helping communities of ethnic minorities, among the most marginalized and poor in Thailand. They will learn about the ways of life, beliefs and peculiar traditions of these communities and, living with families in the villages, they will feel at home.

This program has been designed and created by members from ethnic minorities to support their local communities, and is managed directly by them. The guides come from the communities themselves and receive a fair payment for their work. The resulting profit is distributed among communities and families where the participants are staying.

Udutama association (www.udutama.org) has as one of its objectives to raise awareness about the ways of life and on the problems of the ethnic minorities with which it collaborates. People involved in this program are helping local communities to benefit directly from tourism practiced responsibly, to learn to manage themselves and to share their minority seriously threatened cultures. Udutama association, through regular field visits, guarantees the social nature of the program and, through annual evaluations, does the best to keep the experience of participants fully satisfactory.

After the evaluation process with very satisfactory results, this year 2016 Udutama facilitates the same three programs organized by our counterparts in Thailand last year. And, as a novelty, we offer a new program of eco Cultural trekking with ethnic minorities in the north. The programs are open all year and shall be valid until the end of March 2017.

The first program P1, called Mom Tik s Camp, consists of teaching English (or French) in public schools in Isan, northeast Thailand. It is the sixth year we offer it with a very high degree of satisfaction in the assessments we have done.

The second P2, about alternative community-based tourism, is the fourth year that we offer. Combines classic volunteering activities with the community with alternative tourism, to support a program of community-based tourism managed by the Hilltribe association for the development of ethnic minorities in northern Thailand.

The third P3 is the second year that we offer and is called "English Camp in the land of the Thai Phu". consists of teaching English in primary schools and secondary schools in the province of Nakhon Phanom, southeastern Thailand, touching Laos, in a region inhabited by the ethnic minority of the Phu Thai. This year the program will cost the same as Mom Tik Camp program as we want that families and the local organization can take care of volunteers at no cost.

Finally we offer as a novelty the fourth P4, also an echo alternative cultural trekking, organized by a social company of guides that belong to the Lahu ethnic group.

Evaluation of the Scholarships Project for young people from ethnic minorities PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 21 January 2016 06:36

During the month of January we have been able to visit the ethnic minority at risk of social exclusion young students  that Udutama is supporting so that they can study and  have a better qualify of life.

We had a first informal meeting when they could tell us about their studies during the academic course and about their future plans. We were able to chat with them in depth for about six hours, thanks largely to the collaboration of our volunteer Yui, an excellent person residing in Bangkok who helps us manage the fund scholarships and solve communication problems with the girls in a totally disinterested way.

Mei, from the Lahu ethnic minority, will just finish her secondary education and aims to make the degree of English International Program in the Rajabhat University of Chiang Rai.

Pond, from the Akha ethnic group, also finishes this course her technical studies at the Chiang Rai Agriculture and Technology College. She would like to continue the upper cycle but must first convince her family since her parents have told hem she has to get a job so that she can help them.

Nam, also Akha, will begin next course the last year of her degree in Tourism studies. She will have to develop a tourism project during the course. We are pleased that Nam no longer needs our help, she has found a part time job in a coffeeshop and two of her brothers are already working and can help her family.

We could carry out two subsequent visits to the College where Pond is studying and to Mei’s school. We could talk there with some of their teachers, who confirmed us that both are good students and pass the subjects without difficulty.

The purpose of these grants is to try that these girls have a better future than they expected for the socio-economic conditions of their families, to make them self-sufficient and eventually they can also help their families and their communities thanks to a better payed and worthy job. We think that the results so far are very satisfactory.

We take this opportunity to thank again the contribution to this project of our members, volunteers, donors as Imma and collaborators as Yui. Without their help it would be impossible to make it real !
