During our last trip to Thailand we have seen how the three girls who receive scholarships for education and accommodation from Udutama and two volunteers, Imma and Clara, are taking a very good profit of their studies.

We visited the Vocational College in Chiang Rai where Nam is studying Tourism.

We could talk with Pieerapong Jundao, one of her teachers and adviser. He told us that Nam is a good student, and she always comes to class. She got a 3.7 out of 4 in her GPA (Grade Point Avaluation) in the first semester and a 3.2 in the second, when she started working.

Nam works in a restaurant from 17 to 24 h. She earns around 200 baht per day, money that she gives entirely to her family of 5 brothers and sisters. She has a good relation with her boss as she has some flexibility if she cannot go to work one day.

We visited the Agricultural School, where Pond is studying, 12 km out of Chiang Rai. It was hollidays and the teachers were not there. She got a 3.2 in her GPA in the first semester. She was waiting for the results of the second semester. It's very difficult for her to find a part-time job because the College is too far from the city. She is happy with her studies and we could see that while she was showing us how they grow some plants there. The bicecle is very usefull to her as the College has different areas very far from each other.

Mei decided to stay in a dorm run by christian lahu staff, the same ethnic minority than hers. She didn't feel the peace she wanted when she was sleeping at the school dorm. That's why she decided to move to this other dorm, which is sorrounded with nature. Mei likes painting and writing poems and there she finds the peaceful conditions she expected. We talked with the director and teacher of the lahu dorm.He teaches the students how to become a good leader. Mei belongs to the "red lahu" subgroup. This group is the most vulnerable specially for the girls as their parents usually only think to marry their daughters. But Mei's family is an exception, they want their daughter to study. In her first semester she got a 3.29 and she was waiting for the results of the second semester. We visited her school as well. It was hollidays there and we could not find any teacher. But we could see how huge is the school, a special one for minority group students.

In 2014 there are 2 open programs all year round. The first, called Mom Tik Camp, consists of teaching English (or French) in public schools of Isan, northeast of Thailand. It is the 4 th year that we offer this program. The first year 25 volunteers signed up, the second 35 and last year up to 39, all of them with a very high level of satisfaction.

The second, called "alternative community-based tourism" is a new program that combines classic volunteering to help the community with alternative tourism, to support a program of our community-based tourism partnership, that aims to develop ethnic minorities of northern Thailand.
